What is it?
The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles that surround the shoulder joint: The Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres minor, and Subscapularis. These muscles are responsible for raising and lowering, as well as rotating the arm and stabilizing the shoulder joint. A rotator cuff injury is a problem with any or all of these muscles such as a strain, tear, or inflammation from overuse, sudden injuries, or aging. This can make it hard to lift your arm or do everyday activities like reaching or carrying things.
What does it feel like?
A rotator cuff injury can cause pain in the shoulder, especially when lifting your arm or reaching behind your back. The pain may be dull and constant or sharp with movement. Some people also feel weakness in the shoulder or hear a clicking sound when they move their arm.
What causes it?
Rotator cuff injuries can happen from repetitive movements, like throwing a ball, lifting heavy objects, or doing overhead work. They can also occur from a sudden injury, like falling on your shoulder. As people age, the tendons naturally weaken, making injuries more likely.
Can Massage help?
Massage can help relieve pain and improve blood flow to the injured area, which may speed up healing. It can also loosen tight muscles around the shoulder, reducing stiffness and improving movement. However, if the injury is severe, massage should be combined with other treatments, like physical therapy. If there is an actual diagnosed tear, a doctor should be consulted regarding the degree and severity of the tear to advise if massage should be done or not.

What can I do on my own?
Resting the shoulder and avoiding painful movements can help it heal. Applying ice can reduce swelling, while gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may improve mobility over time. Good posture and proper lifting techniques can also help prevent future injuries. If the pain is severe or doesn’t improve, it’s best to see a doctor.
