Setting up space for your baby's massage

In anticipation of my first Virtual Infant Massage Class with the UPMC Maternal Wellness Program, here is a sneak peek of some of the information we will be covering: How to set up your space to make massaging your baby easier.

While you don't need much to do the actual massage, sometimes introducing baby to massage can be not as smooth as we'd like but having the space set up properly can go a long way towards making the process easier.

These tips and set up is geared towards the idea that you have the time to set aside and dedicate fully to giving baby a massage, but if this is too much and there is no time in the day to do all of this, no problem! Every family, baby, and daily schedule is different so if daily life doesn't allow for you to be able to set all this up, you can still use infant massage throughout the day in different settings and applications. This video simply provides advice for an optimal infant massage set up - and why.

A quick summary of the video:

  • Set up on the floor - babies can roll, so the floor is the best space to do what you need to do without worrying about baby getting away.

  • Have something soft to lay them on - a blanket, pillow, or something soft will make baby happier.

  • Check the temperature of the space - Not too hot or cold because baby (and you) should be comfortable.

  • Don't lay baby directly under a bright overhead light - you are trying to help them relax - not interrogate them.

  • Remove noise distractions - This includes phones. Ambient or quiet background music is ok.

  • Have all your supplies on hand or within easy reach - this includes your massage medium (oils, lotions, etc), as well as a bottle or snack, and toy in case baby needs a distraction, plus an extra diaper in case a change needs to be executed quickly.

The main thing is to remember is to have fun with the massage and enjoy the time with your baby. It should never feel like a "required chore" - it should be a relaxing and enjoyable time for both of you. Like all new things that your baby is learning and experiencing, it may take some time to get them fully accustomed to this latest "new thing". Having a dedicated space with proper materials close at hand will make the experience smoother and more easy for both of you.
